Dear Friends of Father Roger,
As you well know, before he was taken (prematurely from our perspective) to his reward, Father Roger worked tirelessly for the sick and dying of our community through the Sangre de Cristo Hospice and St Mary Corwin Hospital’s Dorcy Cancer Center. You also likely know that, other than his parish, he also had a passionate desire to provide a safe place for our city’s youth to be nurtured and mentored.
He dreamed of a South Side Community Center that would not only serve our youth but also be a day care center for both the young and the old. This “cradle to grave” concept would provide a place for ministry, social interaction and the sharing of wisdom between the generations. Latch key kids would have a safe place to go and programs could be developed to supplement or replace athletic and liberal arts programs dropped in public schools. Young families would have an affordable and safe place for their young children. Families caring for older parents would have a place to give their parents some social interaction and gain some time for themselves.
This dream has been kept alive in the non-profit organization called the Roger P. Dorcy Community Project. We are writing you today to seek your support in making Father Roger’s dream a reality. So far we have obtained a 10-acre plot of land on Red Creek Springs Road, but we need help to pay for it and take the steps necessary to secure capital funding and ongoing support to make this project operational.
Specifically, we need about $20,000 for preliminary architectural and grant work, $150,000 to pay off the land and $250,000 for street and utility improvements before we can break ground for the center. Beyond that we will need in excess of $10 million to bring the project to completion. We have it designed in stages so that we can move forward one step at a time as funds become available. As we move forward, volunteers and in-kind donations will also be greatly accepted. There will be many talents, including grant writers, required to launch, manage and operate this project.
We hope and pray that as you look at your end-of-the-year giving, you can find something to help us complete Father Roger’s legacy to the people of Pueblo.
Thank You and God Bless You!
